How to Write a Song

Jan holds a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition, and has studied jazz at Grant Macewan University and North Texas State University. He also received a scholarship to study composition at the Banff School of FIne Arts.

Jan Randall is currently accepting applications for private lessons in pop and jazz piano, improvisation, song writing, composition, and arranging through the Victoria Conservatory of Music.  Jan Randall also offers preparation for RCM Harmony Exams and is a member of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association.

In addition to a number of years of offering private lessons, Jan has presented a number of music courses for Continuing Studies at the University of Victoria, including “The Rise and Fall of Big Bands”, “Barrelhouse, Boogie Woogie and Stride”, “The History of the Symphony”, and “How to Write a Song”.  Jan has lectured on Film Composition at Red Deer College, the Victoria Film School and NAIT. In Edmonton he structured and taught “Blues for Adults” at Grant MacEwan University and Contemporary Composition for Children with Alberta Showcase.  Finally, he has organized and participated in a variety of workshops for the Canadian Guild of Screen Composers.
